Business Immigration

Catherine McAteer

I practice in the area of business immigration, with additional expertise in employment and litigation.  Canadian immigration legislation and policy is a constantly changing patchwork and I work with my clients to ensure the international mobility of their key employees and to avoid potential pitfalls.  That work may include drafting a corporate immigration policy or procedures handbook, creating a strategic plan for future immigration needs or providing advice on an urgent immigration application.   I am particularly interested in the intersection between immigration and employment law and the unique challenges that employing foreign workers present to an employer.

One of my personal core values is community engagement.  I have been a volunteer with Calgary Legal Guidance at their community legal clinics since 2004 and am a member of the Board of Directors of Alberta Theatre Projects.   I am currently the Vice-Chair of the Canadian Bar Association's Immigration Subsection for Southern Alberta.

I am a member of the Law Societies of Alberta and Ontario.  Upon completing my law degree in 2002 at Queen’s University, I articled with a national law firm in Toronto and then clerked with the Alberta Court of Appeal and Court of Queen's Bench.   I have also worked as a drilling fluids engineer with a large international oilfield services company in Venezuela and Colombia.

Prior to joining Spectrum HR Law, I practiced business immigration law, employment law and litigation with a leading national law firm.
