Use Common Sense To Avoid Employment Law Problems
The law is intended to be the formal reflection of the values and expectations of our society. This means that legal rights and obligations mirror our collective expectations as to how people act and how people are treated. One result of this connection between the law and our personal beliefs is that "doing the right thing" legally is also often the same as "doing the right thing" morally, ethically, and practically.

Immigration minister oversteps his authority
A seemingly innocuous administrative instruction issued earlier this year by Jason Kenney, Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism, has created quite a stir in the legal community. The instruction, which mandates third party language tests for all permanent residence applicants in two categories (Federal Skilled Worker and Canadian Experience) is certainly inconvenient for applicants who previously were not required to undergo a test.

Trend or Foe: Who can take credit for the decline in Alberta's work-related fatalities?
Canwest News Service, Shana Wolch

With Alberta government statistics showing a plunge in work-related deaths in the province for 2009, Albertans are now questioning who or what is responsible for this downward track.  While the best case scenario is that local employers are taking greater steps to prevent workplace fatalities and injuries, the government is questioning whether it is actually the recent recession and the corresponding decline in the number of workers in Alberta that accounts for the 34 per cent decrease in fatalities from 2008's record high.
